II.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANTS.-

Para Para (Eustephia):
It is a
small genera of South American bulbs, in the
family Amaryllidaceae, ranging from central Peru
to Bolivia. It grows in subtropical forests in
the high altitude of the Amazon basin, up to
1,000 meters (3,000 ft) above sea level. Its
flowers are tubular, with a color that ranges
from pink to red with green to yellowish The
leaves are linear. It is the leaves that are
utilized in traditional Peruvian medicine.

Properties:

Increases libido through
its harmine content, for which it is
considered an aphrodisiac.

Recommended in cases of
arthritis and rheumatism.

Huanarpo (Jatropha
Macrantha):
Also called Urco Huanarpo
or Vanarpo. This is the fruit of a wild tree
that grows to 10 or 12 m (33 to 40 ft) in the
Maranon River valley (Peruvian Amazon) and also
found in the localities of Lampa and Sandia in
Puno. Huanarpo can be male or female according
to its shape and properties. The male is long
with red flowers, and has active elements that
stimulate male hormones. Parts used are the
trunk and cortex (bark). Among its active
elements we could name steroids, saponines,
tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, jatrophenone,
coumarin-lignoids, histamine, apigenin, vitexin,
isovitexin, jatrophin, lignin (gossypifolium
Jatropha), curcin, di-esthers, di-terpenes,
diterpenoids (jatrophatrione, citlalitrione).

Properties:

Huanarpo macho, locally
referred as a powerful aphrodisiac, restores
sexual potency because it has a stimulating,
invigorating power.

Increments sexual
appetite notably, helping achieve an
efficient erection.

Acts as an alpha-adrenoreceptor
blocker, reducing the effect of the hormones
that cause the constriction of bloodvessels,

It is found in woods, river banks, and meadows.
Perennial, grows to 2 meters high. Tall stalks,
robust, compound leaves, white or pink flowers.

Properties:

Traditionally, its
flowers and leaves are used in infusion as a
mild sedative and an anti-anxiety drink, to
calm nerves, palpitations, headaches from
nervous attacks, etc.

Also used to calm stomach
upsets, stomach aches, gastrointestinal
spasms; anti-flatulence; against insomnia,
stress, fatigue and anxiety.

Chuchuhuasi (Maytenus
Krukovii):
Native plant from the western Amazon (Peru,
Ecuador, Colombia). Grows naturally throughout
that area. It is a tree that reaches 30 m (100
ft) in height. Belongs to the Celastraceae
family, characterized for its long leaves of 10
– 30 cms (4 – 12 in) length, small white
flowers, reddish brown and strong, hard bark.
Many botanical names have
been given to this tree species such as Krukovii
de Maytenus, M. Ebenifolia, M. Laevis, y M.
Macrocarpa; they all refer to the same tree.
Medicinally, its bark is only used. Among its
active elements are: alkaloids, catechines,
flavonoids, quinones, cumarines, phenols,
saponines, tannins, organic acids, etc.

Properties:

Generally considered as
an aphrodisiac, it increments libido (for
males and females), incrementing especially
male sexual potency.

balance and reinforce the feminine hormonal

Corrects menstrual

Officinale):
Traditionally the roots,
leaves and flowers are utilized. This plant
belongs to the asteracea family. Found easily
along the roads, meadows, prairies and
especially gardens. It grows to 40 cm (16 in).
It is an opportunist plant,
annual and perennial; with primary root and
basal rosette; it has alternating leaves,
without a differentiated peduncle. The stalk is
hollow. The flowers are hermaphrodites. The
corolla has ligulae that terminate in 5 small
teeth. It flowers all year round, and its
yellow flowers are harbingers of spring’s
arrival. Upon maturation, the flowers form a
white globe, which disperses its seeds gently
with a soft blow of air.

diets; used to eliminate toxins in the
blood.

Choleretic, cholagogue,
mild laxative, diuretic, anti-inflammatory.

Helps stop the formation
of gallbladder stones, helping dissolve and

Huasai
(Euterpe Oleracea Mart):
Monoicous palm of multiple stalks, sometimes
inclined that can reach 10 – 20 meters (33 to 66
ft) in height, and 7 – 18 cm (3 to 9 in) in
diameter, with roots visible in its base. The
leaves are pinnate, 8 to 14 per axis, hanging,
with the base forming a green to somewhat
brownish capitel. The fruit is round, purple to
black, 1 to 2 cm in diameter. Can be found in
Peru in the Departments of Loreto, Piura, La
Libertad, San Martin, Lima, Huánuco and Junín.
Also found in the Amazon basin. It adapts to
tropical climates without drought, hydromorphic
soils or with temporary floods.

pain.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus
Officinalis):
Rosemary belongs to the Lamiaceae family. Well
ramified bush, its leaves are short, narrow and
very odoriferous. The leaves have a green
surface and a white underside. Its little
flowers are lilac in color. It grows cultivated
in Peru along the coast, highlands (up to 3,500
meters -11,600 feet- above sea level) and in the
Amazon basin. Rosemary can be cultivated without
problems in tropical, subtropical and humid
climates, and in diverse types of soil.

in the Pampas of Junin. It develops in a cold
environment, with strong winds and high solar
radiation. Found in steppes and mountain
cliffs, in soils rich in minerals.
It belongs to the Crucifer family. It is an
herbaceous plant of approximately 30cm (12 in)
height; its leaves are green and grow in the
upper part of the tuber. Maca has a tuber that
ranges in color from yellowish to light purple,
violet to black. It is very similar in shape to
a turnip, from 1 to 3 cm. in length and 1 to 5
cm in diameter. Maca is a food staple of high
nutritional and biological value: it contains a
high level of essential minerals, specially
calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, zinc, copper,
iron, vitamin B complex and vitamin C.
