DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANTS.-

Cat’s Claw (Uncaria
Tomentosa):
Cat’s claw is a climbing vine, member of the
rubiaceae family. It grows in the Peruvian
Amazon, between 200 to 800 meters above sea
level (650 to 2600 ft). It is a member. It can
reach 25 meters in height (85 ft); it possesses
curved spines that grow along the stalk, from
which it derives its name. The stalk has 30cm in
diameter; the leaves are ovoid and measure 6 to
12cm long. Full development of this vine is
about 20 years. Of the 50 known varieties of
Uncaria, only 2 have proven curative properties:
Uncaria Tomentosa and Uncaria Guianensis. For
therapeutic uses, the leaves and bark are used.

Annato (Bixa
Orellana):
It has its origins in the Peruvian Amazon
basin. This small tree grows to between 3 and
10 meters in height; while the trunk’s diameter
can reach 20-30cm. It looks frondose, ornamental
and robust. It has heart-shaped leaves, pointy,
10 to 20 cm long and 5 to 10 cm wide; green
color with some reddish streaks. The flowers
have five pink or white petals. The root is well
developed. The fruit is an ovoid capsule, 3 to 5
cm long with a surface generally covered by
abundant appendages. The seeds are pyramidal and
are covered by a pulpous, sticky, resinous,
reddish-orange membrane.
