I.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT.-
It is a small annual wild shrub
that grows to a height of 30 - 60 cm (1-2 ft) tall,
native to the Peruvian Amazon. It has a tall stem
and its leaves are 7 – 12 mm long; its flowers are
small, white, rooted to a leaf, where they give
fruit. The root has little ramification. The leaves
and roots are commonly used.
HABITAT:
Found in the tropics, this
plant adapts very well in different soils and
ecological zones up to 3,000 meters above sea level
(10,000 ft). In Peru, it is found along all the
tropical zones, where it grows wild in shady and
humid places.

II.
HISTORICAL AND TRADITIONAL USE.-
Chanca Piedra (Stone Breaker) is
the Spanish name for Phyllanthus Niruri. It has been
used for generations by natives of the Amazon region
as an effective remedy to eliminate kidney/bladder
stones and gallstones. It has an effective action
against Calcium Oxalate (CaOx) as well as Uric acid,
not only eliminating its deposits but also
preventing such deposits.
Stone Breaker has an excellent
diuretic action, scientifically accepted, and used
in local medicine. It has also been used against
ascitis or hydropesia as a renal anti-inflammatory;
against urine retention; against urethral secretion
and against prostate pain.
Stone Breaker has also shown
liver-protection activity; and has been recommended
in traditional and local medicine as part of the
treatment of hepatitis and to stop the cellular
damage caused by ethyl alcohol consumption.
Stone Breaker has been under
scientific study worldwide, and traditional Chinese
medicine now recommends it as an excellent liver
protector, especially for those recovering from
Hepatitis B.
III. CHEMICAL
COMPOSITION.-
Based on the data given by
NAPRALET, Stone Breaker contains lignins, terpenes,
flaonoids, lipids, benzenoids, steroid alkaloids,
alkenes, vitamin C, tannins and saporines.
IV. MEDICINAL
PROPERTIES.-
Reduces and eliminates calculus
in the kidneys and urinary tract. It works through a
muscle relaxing action specific to the urinary and
bilious tracts, that facilitates the expulsion of
calculus from kidneys and bladder.

Has anti-oxidant properties.

Used against liver
affections, especially against ichteria. (2)

digestive system.

Used against urogenital

Used as an anti-inflammatory
of the kidneys.

Used in venereal infections.

Used against infections in
the throat and mouth.

Used as a gastro-intestinal
anti-inflammatory.
