II. DESCRIPCION DE LAS PLANTAS.-
-
Boldo (Peumus
Boldus Mol.):
A perennial shrub that grows to 3 – 6 m (10
– 20 ft) high, with persistent and aromatic
foliage. The leaves grow oppositely, have an
oval or elliptical shape, with the edge
whole and unbroken, dark green surface with
prominent glands that give it a rough
texture to the touch. The flowers grow in
bunches; they are small and white. The fruit
is an ovoid drupe, yellowish when mature,
carnose, 5 – 7 mm (0.2 – 0.28 in) long. The
fruit is edible. For medicinal purposes, the
leaves are used.

Properties:
-
Stimulates production
of gastric juices and bile; augments the
secretion of urea and uric acid, due to
a high content of an alkaloid named
boldine.
-
Hepatic stimulant,
helps fight minor hepatobilious
affections, such as hepatic
insufficiency (slow liver and
gallbladder), hepatitis, constipation
and migraines caused by indigestion.
-
Cholagogue,
AmphoCholeretic and Choleretic,
regulates and facilitates biliar
secretion and excretion, which
facilitates digestion of fats.
-
Diuretic and
antiseptic of the urinary tract:
stimulates urine production, detoxifies
the body.
-
Anti-oxidant and
anti-inflammatory; carminative.
-
Very mild analgesic,
calms the nervous system and the
circulatory system.
-
Artichoke (Cynara
Scolynus L):
Herbaceous plant,
very close to the thistle. Grows up to 5ft
tall, and flowers from the top every year
after winter. Creates a rosette of deeply
segmented leaves. The leaves are light green
and are covered with white fibrils that give
it a pale aspect. The stalk is rounded, with
few leaves and on top of it grow large heads
(the artichokes), covered in many coriaceous
bractea (leathery plate-like leaves).
It
flowers in summertime. For food purposes,
the heads are collected, for medicinal
purposes, the leaves are collected. These
have a characteristic bitter taste, strong
and persistent.

Properties:
-
Helps reduce
cholesterol levels in the blood,
decreases arterial pressure and prevents
atherosclerosis; which decreases the
risk of cardiovascular disease and helps
in the recovery from it as well as from
infarction, angina, etc.
-
Helps reduce blood
glucose levels, good for hyperglycemic
and diabetic people.
-
Diuretic, supports
the elimination of liquids in the body.
This also helps reduce obesity and
decrease the set of diseases and
symptoms related to retention of
liquids, toxins and uric acid in the
body: circulatory and hepatic
dysfunction, gout, arthritis, etc.
-
Protects the Liver.
Helps in the recovery from hepatic
diseases (cirrhosis, hepatitis, hepatic
insufficiency, intoxication, etc).
-
Contains caffeic
acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, which
help protect the liver, and
caffeoylquinic acid that has a
choleretic function, or helps restore
bilious flow.
-
Alfalfa
(Medicago Sativa):
A member of the bean family, Alfalfa is a
perennial legume. This fodder plant is
cultivated in irrigated fields. Known for
its blue flowers, a color not common in this
genre. Its fruit is in spiral form, like
most of the Medicago. Alfalfa is a source of
minerals like calcium, phosphorous,
potassium, magnesium and sulfur among
others.

Properties:
-
It has a diuretic,
purifying and detoxifying effect.
-
Helps digestion, due
principally to the enzymes it possesses,
its chlorophyll, minerals and diverse
vitamins.
-
It has an
anti-ulcerous effect, due to its high
content of vitamins A and E,
bio-flavonoids and above all, to
methylmethionine or vitamin U, as well
as other enzymes that facilitate
digestion.
-
Its chlorophyll is an
important element used in the formation
of blood cells and the metabolization of
carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Thus,
it is used in the treatment of anemia
and in weight-loss diets.
-
Reduces cholesterol,
the formation of cholesterol plaque and
thus, atherosclerosis.
-
It has a high content
of proteins and through them, a high
content of essential amino acids.
-
Has estrogenic
properties, through its high levels of
isoflavones (ideal for menopause with
its high content of calcium and
magnesium).
-
Recommended for
lactating mothers because it augments
production of milk; plus helps mothers
recover faster from partum through its
high iron content.
-
Its high vitamin K
content helps those with tendencies to
hemorrhage and capillary fragility.
-
It is a great
nutrient, with many minerals and
alkalinizers. It has a rejuvenating
effect because of the SOD enzymes and
catalases that reduce free radicals.
-
It can augment
overall resistance to disease due to its
enzymes and alkalinity, which give the
body a good health equilibrium.
-
Dandelion
(Taraxacum Officinale):
Traditionally the
roots, leaves and flowers are utilized. This
plant belongs to the asteracea family.
Found easily along the roads, meadows,
prairies and especially gardens. It grows to
40 cm (16 in).
It
is an opportunist plant, annual and
perennial; with primary root and basal
rosette; it has alternating leaves, without
a differentiated peduncle. The stalk is
hollow. The flowers are hermaphrodites. The
corolla has ligulae that terminate in 5
small teeth. It flowers all year
round, and its yellow flowers are harbingers
of spring’s arrival. Upon maturation, the
flowers form a white globe, which disperses
its seeds gently with a soft blow of air.

Properties:
-
Used in weight loss
diets; used to eliminate toxins in the
blood.
-
Choleretic,
cholagogue, mild laxative, diuretic,
anti-inflammatory.
-
Helps stop the
formation of gallbladder stones, helping
dissolve and expel them.
-
Barberry
(Berberis Vulgaris):
The barberry is a thorny shrub that can grow
to 1 – 3 m (3 – 10 ft) high. It has green
leaves with serrated edges, some of which
turn into thorns (simple or with three
digits). The wood is of an intense yellow
color. The flowers are small, have 6 petals
and have an intense yellow color. They grow
in bunches hanging from branches. The
flowers are edible, with an acid flavor.
The fruits are edible berries, the most
frequent colors are coral, red, purple and
black. Its active components are alkaloids
(palmatine, columbamine, berberine), resin
and tannins.
Properties:
-
Stimulates the
digestive function, increasing bilious
secretion (as a choleretic and
cholagogue) which facilitates digestion
of fats.
-
Used against kidney
stones (renal calculus), constipation
and fever.
-
Used to treat
hepatobilious (liver and gallstone)
congestion, coletiasis, colecistitis,
urine and water retention.
-
Reduces arterial
pressure.
-
Used as a spasmolitic
against gastrointestinal spasms,
contractions and convulsions.
-
Hercampuri
(Gentianella Alborocea):
Traditional Plant used
